The 23-year-old high school teacher from Castle Hill played for the Magic women’s team in their inaugural season in 2015, where they reached the quarter-finals.

A little more than a year after taking up the game, Millett will get to wear national colours when Australia take on Ireland in Melbourne on Saturday.

In a slight twist, she will not actually be playing Aussie Rules, but the hybrid version of the game, known as International Rules.

The men’s version ofInternational Rules has been played between Australia and Ireland for a number of years, but it is the first time there has been a women’s fixture.

“Women’s sport is growing so quickly now, it’s just a great opportunity to finally get recognised and play with the men,” Millett said.

“It’s about time women started getting on a level playing field, especially in AFL.

“They’re starting the women’s competition next year, and I think it’s fantastic to see that female athletes are being acknowledged for their achievements in sport.”

In another interesting twist, Millett was eligible to play for Australia and Ireland.

As she holds an Irish passport, Millett could have played for Ireland, but decided to stick with Australia.

“My mum is Irish, she moved out here when she met my dad and I’ve been going back and forth to Ireland pretty much my entire life,” she said.

“I’ve had a bit to do with Gaelic football when I’ve been in Ireland, I’ve never played it competitively, but I have with my family.

“The main difference is you play with a round ball and you have a soccer goal. Scoring is a bit different, and the way it’s played is a bit different.”

Before heading to Melbourne, Millett said she was feeling both excited and nervous about playing for Australia for the first time.

Her selection has been met with a great response from everyone at the Western Magic.
