It comes as atleast two homes have been destroyed by suspicious fires in Ashmont alone this year.

While authorities plead with fire bugs to stop callous arson attacks, locals are callingon the Department of Familyand Communities Services (FACS) to fill homes faster.

Darryl Ross, who has lived in Ashmont since 1989, believes homes left vacant for months on end are a hideaway for squatters and would-be criminals, while homes destroyed by fire are making an eyesore of the suburb.

A drive through Ashmont this weekuncoveredat least nine homes boarded up or vacant due to obvious fire damage. Some of themwere damaged by fire last year.

“We’ve had a lot of fires in Ashmont, but most are confined to the Blakemore, Mumford, Marshall and Callaghan streets,” Mr Ross said.
