Understanding sex will not lead to child sexual abuse

Neil Aitchison (Inbox, March 3) makes the ridiculous claim that Safer Schools will lead to more child-on-child sexual abuse, and that children shouldn’t learn about “adult only sex issues” because it will lead to experimentation.

Knowledge is power, and children should be taught (in age-appropriate language) about their bodies, safe boundaries and respectful relationships from the time they can talk.

Excellent books such as Everyone’s got a bottom, No more secrets for me, Mummy laid an egg, and Not for kids cover appropriate touching, disclosing abuse, pregnancy and birth, and dealing with explicit online images in a language and format that is easily accessible for parents and children.

Children will always experiment and always be fascinated with body parts – it’s natural curiosity and a normal part of child development.

Pushing the abstinence and religious moral indignation message won’t work.

Anyone who has kids knows that prohibiting something makes it doubly attractive.

Far better to discuss the options and consequences, and highlight the important of respect and knowledge.

We need to empower our young people and show them that we can trust their judgement.
