Households in the indigenous gulf community use the cards as a pre-paid system to buy electricity to fill the household metre, and the electricity cuts out when the card’s value is used.

Doomadgee Police Station’s Senior Sergeant Aaron Baxter said the thieves put some of the cards in random household metres.

“We have recovered $12,500. We can say we have had reports of people finding extra value added to their power boxes. Essentially someone has gone slipping extra power into people’s boxes without them knowing.”Senior Sergeant Baxter did not use the phrase“Robin Hood” to describe the thieves, but he had heard it used by others.

15 people were charged with breaking into the post office. On the same night of Tuesday, February 23, they broke into the day care centre through a vent and stole food.Senior Sergeant Baxter said some of the accusedwere remanded in custody while others are due to appear in the Doomadgee Court on March 16.
