The theme for 2016 is I Belong. You Belong. We Belong, which aligns with the Catholic Church’s strong focus on supporting refugees and asylum seekers and the need for a compassionate global community.

The theme also ties in with the Catholic Church’s celebration of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, which centres on pardon, strength and love.

In this Year of Mercy, Pope Francis is calling on all Catholic communities to extend mercy to those in need, particularly refugees fleeing hunger and war.

“I make an appeal to the parishes, to religious communities, to monasteries and sanctuaries, to express the concreteness of the Gospel and to welcome a family of refugees,” Pope Francis said.

To celebrate and promote Catholic Schools Week, St James’ will offer a variety of activities and educational initiatives showcasing the themes of belonging and mercy at their annual Open Day on Thursday.

Visitors can enjoy the open classrooms from 9.30am to 10.30am, liturgy between 10.40am and 11am, and Coffee and Cake for Cambodia at 11am until 11.40am.

Principal Niamh Marzol said the event was the perfect opportunity to illustrate these important themes in action at their Catholic school.

“One of the central pillars of Catholic education is creating a sense of belonging and community and providing the support that is integral to enabling students become the best versions of themselves,” she said.

“It’s one of the most important events on the school calendar each year.

“During the Open Day, people can experience for themselves the range and level of opportunities available to students at St James’.

“Catholic schools like ours offer distinctive educational experiences which underpin our ability to create strong leaders and adults of integrity and compassion.”

Mrs Marzol said the pastoral care support at St James’ was strongly supported by outstanding opportunities for academic excellence, leadership, sport, music and the performing arts.

“These opportunities are all supported by excellent facilities, state of the art technologies and talented and dedicated teachers,” she said.
