Short Takes

WELL said, Robert Dillon. I lovedthe back page of Saturday’sHerald. The Knights and the Jetsare our teams. Let’s stop the“our team’s [code]is better than yours”.Both are Newcastle teams, we should follow them both. Newcastle against the rest, whether round ball or oval. Go Newcastle!

Rita Harrison, ValentineTHE royal commission is providing further evidence to me thatthe Catholic Church cares little for victims of sexual abuse. It makes me think the devil is not such a bad bloke after all. At least he only tortures the sinners and the guilty after death. Those clergymen guilty of abuse, and those in their organisationfailed to stop, preyed on the innocent. Many of those may be out ofthe reach of the commission but I truly hope the bloke with the pitchfork has a special welcomewhen the time comes.

Nigel Robinson, BranxtonIT was lovely to watch the first game of rugby league of the season and see no flares in sight. As well as being a rugby league fan, I am asoccer fanbut I get disappointed by the mentality of some people at A-League matches.

Colin GeatchesMayfieldI READ with interest Ian Kirkwood’s account of a trip to Tours to study transport systems as a possible model for Newcastle(“Tram turns patronage, takes cars from Tours”, Herald, 5/3).I wonder whether Andrew Fletcher, while”reflecting on the experience on a fast train back to Paris” as he covered the 340 km in 1 hour 14 minutes, compared this journey to the anything up to three hours that it takes to travel the 165 km from Newcastle to Sydney?

Anne Wood, NewcastleI SAT at the bus stop in Newcastle on Saturday night waiting for the 110 bus from 6.50pm to 7.45pm, during which time there should have been threebuses. It’s agood thing Iwasn’t catching a train. Thisis our wonderful transport system.

SueFower, NewcastleI RARELY watch reality TVbut recently I tuned into I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here, maybe because our own Paul Harragon was on there. The things I don’t like about the show are the hosts behaving like eight-year-olds and the things the contestants are made to do to get food. But to go through all those trials to raise money for charity is great. Paul is such a gentleman and a calming influence on the others. It is a pleasure to watch him. If only more of us could be like him. He is gold. Go Paul!

Diana Taaffe, HamiltonWE need to band together to put pressure on Pope Francis to open the Vatican door to the victims. Give them the voice they never had as children. Let’s get behind them.
