IN MEMORY: Jaimie and Berniece Buck will be shaving their heads with 28 other people at the Katherine Country Club on April 3 to honour the memory of Kynie Jean. IT HASbeen 30 years since Berniece Buck received the diagnosis of her two-year-old daughter, Kynie Jean, and it was only a few months later that her daughter passed away from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Every second year, Ms Buck has been shaving her head as part of the World’s Greatest Shave, however, this year, she saidwanted to do something bigger to honour the 30-year anniversary of her daughter’s death.

“I don’t get my hair cut in between, so we raise money and shave in her memory,” she said.

“This year, I’m hoping to get 30 people …so we can make it something special;I just thought it would be a nice way to honour her and raise awareness and money.”

When Ms Buck received Kynie Jean’s diagnosis on April 3, 1986, she said had been overwhelmed and did not know how to handle the news.

It was later found that the initial diagnosis was incorrect and within three months of it,Kynie Jean passed away.

“[The World’s Greatest Shave] is a really good cause, it really is,” Ms Bucksaid.

“It’s really difficult when you lose someone to this, or any cancer, but when your baby is only two-and-a-half,it …30 years later, it still hits me as hard as it did then.”

Now that Katherine Country Club has volunteered to host the shave, Ms Buck can focus on promoting the event and getting more people involved.

Six people have agreed to shave their heads on April 3 and while Ms Buck is open to people dyeing their hair to participate, she said she would love to see 30 people go under the clippers.

“I would like 30 shavers if I can get them, because we are going completely bald,” she said.

“That’s what I want to get out to people is that even if you don’t shave, come make a day of it andhave some fun.

“We’re having a free sausage sizzle, music and there’ll be raffles.”

The event is expected to start late in the afternoon, with the shave and raffles scheduled as the sun begins to set.

Katherinites of all agesare invited to participate and for more information, call 0498 383 944.
