School children opt for pedal power

ST ALIPIUSParish School is focused on encouraging more pupils to ride to and from school each day.

Theschool’s physical educationco-ordinator,Maria Nunn, said there were 12 pupils who regularly rode their bikes to school.

But she said this was set to increase with the schoollooking atsupporting more children torideto school once a term.

Last Friday, 90 pupils –half the number of pupils at the school–took part inNational Ride to School Day.

The children met at two points before peddlingto school with support from teachers. Two pupils rode from Pootilla.

“The children loved the idea of riding together in groups to school from the two points,” Ms Nunn said.

“It’s good community involvement.”

Bicycle Network data showstwo out of 10 children currently ride to school, compared witheight out of 10 in the 1970s.

National Ride to School Day exposes children to the benefits of exercising outdoors and haspositive effects on the environment.
