The Bendigo Thunder star has been selected to play for the Demons in Sunday’s AFL women’s exhibition match against the Western Bulldogs at Craigieburn.

Grant was selected by the Demons after impressing in the AFL women’s academy program over summer.

“It’s a massive opportunity for me. I can’t wait to get out there and play my role,’’ Grant said.

The Demons and Bulldogs retained their Victorian-based players from last year’s successful AFL exhibition games, while the interstate players returned home.

Grant was picked by the Demons as a top-up player and she’ll start in the forward pocket against the club she’s supported since childhood.

“(Melbourne women’scoach) Michelle Cowan told me two weeks ago that I had been picked by the Demons and I had a pretty amazing moment there as it all sunk in,’’ Grant said.

“I later found out that the Melbourne recruiters had been watching me and the Thunder for the past few years.

“It would have been nice to play with the Bulldogs, but I couldn’t be happier to play with Melbourne.”

The Demons play three exhibition games against the Bulldogs as part of the warm-up to next year’s inaugural AFL women’s competition.

Grant is hoping to impress enough to earn selection in the first AFL women’s draft later this year.

“The Melbourne women’s team also plays against the Brisbane Lions on the MCG in June,’’ Grant said.

“If I do well on Sunday I’d love to get the chance to play in that game.

“At the end of the day the draft is at the end of the year and anyclubcould pick me up there or no-one could pick me up.

“I just want to keep listening and learningto improve my game and to give myself every chance of being picked.”

Sunday’s game starts at 5.15pm.
