ARARAT Rural City mayor Paul Hooper says the city could again become a thriving rail hub.

Cr Hooper said the long-awaited north-west rail re-opening presented enormous opportunities for Ararat.

“In the early part of last century Ararat was a rail distribution hub,” he said.

“At one time, the town had 700 employees working on the railways.

“If and whenthe Maryborough-Ararat line re-opensit would be a serious economic driver for the shire.

“I’d like to think Ararat could become a logistics base for enterprise.”

Council hasbeen given no time frame for when the line could re-open.

Cr Hooper said the shire had been proactive in ensuring there would be no issues once it did occur.

In recent months council officers have completed a detailed survey of all municipal rail crossings on the Ararat-Maryborough line.

“Council has an obligation to ensure those crossings are maintained and remain open,” he said.
