It again showcased the wonderful skilled and talented people we have in this region.

It starts a week of activities acknowledging the role of women in our region.

The function was a credit to chairperson Vicki Tiegs and her committee.

This year’s event focussed on the in-focus and unfortunately increasing issue of domestic violence.

Many people shared some deeply personal stories.

They were challenging to listen to and even more challenging to discuss.

Yet as many, including keynote speaker author Tara Moss, acknowledged these arethe challenging discussions we need to have if we are to make a difference in society.

It’s a confronting issue, but we need to confront it head on as a community and stop dancing around the topic.

Everyone at the WEC, male or female, would have come away with a much greater understanding of the issue from a victim’s perspective.

Also, how to better address and manage discussions on the subject of domestic violence.

Together we can educate a new generation that this sort of behaviour is not acceptable in a modern, evolved society.

Together, as everyone in attendance at the function clearly understood, we can make a difference.

Congratulations to the five wonderful scholarship winners from the function, who each spoke brilliantly and had the crowd eating out of their hand.

SPECIAL AUTUMN EDITIONNext Saturday, the Illawarra Mercury will bring you a special autumn edition.

It will feature a special look at the Wollongong Botanical Gardens, which is soon to unveil the 2016 Sculpture in the Gardens exhibition.

The exhibition features 14 new sculptural works from local, national and international artists celebrating the theme “Illawarra 200 – Shared Values, Shared Futures”.

We will also show you some of the exciting work being undertaken at the gardens which is protecting the natural heritage and history of this unique region.

If you are in the vicinity of the gardens on Friday come along and say hi to our team.
