A clean-up is being hosted by Dubbo City Council on Sunday and individuals, families and volunteer groups are invited to help tackle litter in the community.

Council’s manager landcare services Lynton Auld urged residents to register at Macquarie Lions Park at the rear of the visitor information centre to help “clean up the city, help clean up the river”.

“It’s going to be a nice day,” he said.

“People fan out from here, along the river and then we’re happy if people want to clean up their own patch.”

Registration is open from 8am, and council will provide a free barbecue to participants about 12pm.

“It’s important that they are registered so they’re insured, in case anything untoward happens to them,” Mr Auld said. “It also helps Clean Up Australia Day to justify why we invest in it. The more people we get the more we can keep it going.

“We’re doing our bit for the river. People can come and go, everyone is welcome.”

Last year’s Clean Up Australia Day was a great success with more than 533,500 volunteers across Australia collecting more than 13,708 tonnes of rubbish from clean-up sites across the country.

Parkes MP Mark Coulton also called on community members to pitch in at the weekend.

“The communities across Western NSW are passionate about protecting the local environment and making their towns safe and clean for everyone to enjoy,” Mr Coulton said.

“This year we hope to see a lot of new faces joining forces to help clean up.”
