The councils voted at last week’s Eyre Peninsula Local Government Association conference in Ceduna to take the issue to the state Local Government Association and raise it directly with the minister.

Eyre Peninsula Local Government Association president Bruce Green said the decision stemmed from the councils’ frustration in dealing with the two agenciesand concerns they did not have enoughlocal knowledge or understand local issuesas well as they could.

Mr Green said a lot of changes would be needed before that could happen as the Native Vegetation Council and Coast Protection Board operated under separate legislation and NRMoperated under its own Act.

“It would require substantial change but this is the first step of saying, ‘would this make sense?’,” Mr Green said.

He said the region’scouncils had encountered a lot ofdifficulties with the agencieswhen it came to development, particularly with the Native Vegetation Council.

“It’s not the Adelaide Hills, urban development isn’t putting too much pressure on native vegetation.

“We have a low population base and lots of space between the people.”

Mr Green said last week’s decisionwas about sending a message to both organisations that the regionneeded people locally, although he said they did make an effort to travel to the region when issues arose.

“We thought the NRM might understand the issues a little more than Adelaide-based agencies.”

However,he said concerns were raised by some councils that the functions may be shifted across to the NRM but the funding might not.

“If we expect NRM to do thiswithout the funding made available to the CoastProtection Authority and Native Vegetation Council we could end up with an even greater NRM levy increase,” Mr Green said.
