Art-loving drug dealer’s story is uplifting

Sunraysia Daily on March 1 tells us the heart-wrenching story titled “Sentence Slashed”.

An ice dealer caught with 27 grams of highly diluted drugs in a fry pan in his family home is now reading classical novels and helping prisoners write letters home, a court has been told.

He had been reading classical novels such as The Story of Civilisation and Shakespeare while in prison. Judge Bourke said he was to be “commended” for that.

Judge Michael Bourke set aside Magistrate Peter Dunn’s eight-month sentence and resentenced him to two and a half months’ prison, followed by an 18-month community corrections order with 250 hours’ community work. It’s amazing what reading a good copy of Shakespeare can do to reform a person.
